ELKINS — Officials with both the Elkins-Randolph County Regional Airport and the City of Philippi-Barbour County Airport Authority are discussing how best to use the $211,111 in federal funding both airports will receive.
Sen. Joe Manchin announced funding for improvement projects totalling $5.3 million to be distributed to seven airports throughout West Virginia last week.
Officials at both airports said it is too early to determine specifically how the funds will be spent, but all said they are appreciative to receive the funding.
“The Elkins-Randolph County Regional Airport is grateful to U.S. Senator Joe Manchin for helping acquire funding for our airport,” Elkins-Randolph Manager Mary Alice Ricottilli told The Inter-Mountain. “We are in the beginning stages of determining the most beneficial use for the funding and cannot speculate as to its use until the Authority evaluates all options and makes its decision.”
City of Philippi-Barbour County Airport Manager Verle Brown said the airport staff is also grateful for the funding and that it will assist in many different areas of improvement.
“The funding is going to help us out substantially,” Brown said. “It definitely allows us to do some things we’ve been wanting to do. But I won’t know a lot more until I get together with the board members and see what’s the best way to use it.”
The funding will come from the United States Department of Transportation.
“This funding will improve regional airports across the state and spur economic development,” Manchin said in a press release. “As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and a pilot myself, I will continue to advocate for funding and resources to support West Virginia airports.”
Additional funding from the American Rescue Plan will ensure that the projects will have a 100 percent federal match.
“West Virginia airports serve as hubs for economic development and provide visitors with access to our wild and wonderful state,” Manchin added. “The Rescue Plan continues to provide much needed relief to West Virginia economic sectors that have been impacted throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, including our airports and tourism industry.”
Other West Virginia airports to receive funding include the Tri-State Airport Authority near Huntington, the Greenbrier Valley Airport in Lewisburg, the Benedum Airport Authority in Bridgeport, along with airport authorities in Raleigh and Logan counties.
