Customers will notice a change in the bagging material for to go orders and groceries this fall.
Grocery stores, retailers, small vendors and restaurants will be prohibited from providing plastic carry out bags starting October 1 due to the state issued ban.
“Single use bags are not easily recyclable and reducing their use will protect our rivers, our streams and help our recycling system run more efficiently,” said Dave Bennett, communications.
The state legislature has been focused on reducing single use bag usage and the bag ban was passed in 2019 with plans to be implemented in January 2021. The COVID-19 emergency delayed the implementation until fall.
As folks transition from using plastic carry out bags, Ecology encourages customers to shift to reusable bags for groceries and to go orders. Customers can opt for compliant plastic or paper bags offered by a business, however state law will require a charge of 8 cents per bag. The 8 cent charge is not a tax, but a sale for the merchant and serves as an incentive for customers to bring their own totes.
