MILROY — With only a few games left in the regular season, the Marshall and Milroy Yankees amateur baseball teams looked to build some key momentum before the playoffs. It was a tight start, but six straight runs by the Yankees helped them gain control of the pace and never look back en route to a 6-1 victory on Friday.
It was a pitcher’s duel to start, as Marshall’s Mason Penske and Milroy’s Isaac Schmitt settled into their respective zones and kept things scoreless for the first two and a half innings. The Yankees then struck first on offense in the bottom half of the third, with Jacob Hughes drawing a walk and Jackson Hughes connecting on a double before Branden Flock smacked a two-run single. Milroy wasn’t done there, as Matt Bauer got an RBI single and Aaron Mathiowetz brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to give the Yankees a 4-0 lead after three.
In the next inning, the Yankees kept up their momentum, this time with two outs, as Flock and Andy Schmidt hit back-to-back solo home runs to push their lead to 6-0.
Marshall had an opportunity to get on the board in the sixth when Zach Olson got a leadoff single and Logan Tomasek reached on an error to put runners on the corners with no outs. A couple of batters later, Ryan VanMoer was able to capitalize with an RBI single to make it 6-1.
But that was the closest Marshall got. The A’s would load the bases with no outs in the top of the eighth, but the Yankees got three straight strikeouts to get out of the jam and ultimately earn the 6-1 victory.
David Schmidt led the Yankees with four hits while Flock added two hits, including a home run, and three RBI, Bauer had two hits and an RBI, Andy Schmidt had a home run and an RBI and Schmitt, Jacob Hughes and Jackson Hughes each had a hit.
Schmitt earned the victory on the mound, going seven innings while allowing one run on five hits and struck out nine.
VanMoer led Marshall with two hits and an RBI while Tomasek added two hits and Doug Mead, Olson, Ryan Schwagel and Penske each had a hit.
Penske took the loss on the mound, going eight innings while allowing six runs on 12 hits and struck out eight.
