U.S. natural gas consumption is expected to decline through 2022, the Energy Information Administration said Tuesday.
Following a decrease in 2020 driven by the economic slowdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic and lower heating demand amid milder temperatures, natural gas consumption will continue to fall in 2021 and 2022, the EIA said.

Consumption fell by around 2 percent last year, from 85.1 billion cubic feet per day in 2019 to 83.2 billion cubic feet per day in 2020, the EIA said.
While the electric power sector increased its natural gas consumption in 2020 due to historically low natural gas prices, making natural gas more competitive with coal for generating electric power, it is expected to consume less natural gas in 2021, the EIA said. This year, more electricity generation will come from coal and renewables as natural gas prices are expected to increase.
In addition, more renewable energy will come on line come online in 2021 and 2022 to compete with natural gas-fired plants.
Heating demand from both residential and commercial consumers fell by a combined 2.1 billion cubic feet per day from 2019 to 2020 primarily because of the pandemic as well as a 9 percent year-over-year dip in heating degree days due to warmer weather.
Residential and commercial natural gas consumption will increase in 2021 and then decrease slightly in 2022, the EIA said.
After decreasing by 0.6 billion cubic feet per day in 2020 as a result of a weaker economy during the COVID-19 pandemic, industrial natural gas consumption will increase in 2021 and 2022 as businesses resume operations, according to the EIA.
