Six energy sectors accounted for 87 percent of the total U.S. manufacturing energy consumption in 2018, the Energy Department said Monday.
The sectors, including chemicals, petroleum and coal products, paper, primary metals, food and nonmetallic mineral products, consumed 16.9 quadrillion British thermal units of energy of the total 19.4 quadrillion British thermal units consumed by the U.S. manufacturing sector in 2018, according to a survey released by the Energy Department every four years.

Manufacturers consume energy as both fuel and nonfuel, or feedstock.
Fuel consumption, which accounts for about two-thirds of the energy consumed in manufacturing, remained flat at 14.9 quadrillion quadrillion British thermal units in both 2014 and 2018, the Energy Department said.
Nonfuel consumption was up from 28 percent of the total manufacturing energy consumption in 2014 to 32 percent in 2018, the EIA said. The uptick is due to an increase in the availability of natural gas and hydrocarbon gas liquids, especially ethane.
The consumption of hydrocarbon gas liquids, naphtha, and natural gas by the petroleum, coal chemicals, and primary metals sectors accounted for 22 percent of all the energy used in the U.S. manufacturing sector in 2018, the Energy Department said.
Manufacturing has become more fuel efficient in the U.S. over the past two decades, with manufacturing gross output increasing by 12 percent as fuel consumption decreased by 16 percent, according to the Energy Department.
