Bucs DB Carlton Davis apologizes for use of anti-Asian slur - The Athletic

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis apologized for a tweet posted Sunday night in which he used an anti-Asian slur.

"Gotta stop letting g---- in Miami," read the tweet posted at 6:42 p.m. It was deleted shortly thereafter, but screenshots were taken to document the tweet. The derogatory term comes under heightened scrutiny after waves of anti-Asian violence in the past year because of COVID-19's origins in China.

Davis tweeted an explanation about two hours after the original tweet, saying he “would never offend any group of people” and that he had understood the word to mean someone is “lame” and not in any racial context. Davis said he will “retire that word from my vocabulary giving (sic) the hard times our Asian family are enduring.

"I did not realize it has a much darker, negative connotation," Davis tweeted. "I have learned a valuable lesson and want to apologize to anyone that was offended by seeing that word because we need to focus on helping each other."

Davis, a key starter on the Bucs' Super Bowl championship team, could not be reached for comment, and messages left with the team and his agents seeking comment were not immediately returned.

Davis, 24, who is from Miami, was a second-round pick out of Auburn in 2018. He had four interceptions this past season and was often assigned to an opponent's top receiver. He will be an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming season.
