Many Americans are looking for ways to be more sustainable in their everyday lives, including reducing certain types of energy consumption. But which type of energy is our country most reliant on?

In the U.S., energy sources are grouped into many general categories such as primary and secondary, renewable and nonrenewable, and fossil fuels. Primary energy sources include fossil fuels such as petroleum, natural gas and coal as well as nuclear energy and renewable sources of energy. Electricity is a secondary energy source that is generated from primary energy sources.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, petroleum was the biggest energy source in the United States in 2019, making up 37% of consumption. Behind petroleum, natural gas made up 32% of the country's overall energy consumption.

Other than the top two sources, other major energy sources that were consumed were renewable energy, coal and nuclear electric power.

These various sources of energy are not equally expensive everywhere across the country. To understand the impact of energy on Americans' finances, WalletHub compared the total monthly energy bills in each state and Washington, D.C. These rankings determined the most and least expensive states for energy.
