The Sunday-night HBO series continued its streak with another win this year.
Perhaps sensing that four-year champion Last Week Tonight With John Oliver would win once more this year, the 2020 Emmys introduced a couple of new elements into the presentation of the variety talk series award.
Host and nominee Jimmy Kimmel explained that he and the other nominees in the category, appearing via video from various locations, each had a magic box that would be opened by remote control but only one box had an Emmy in it. Before the recipient of the winning box was revealed, late-night legend David Letterman appeared, after a mock fight with an Uber driver, from a truly remote location, to present this year's nominees.
Letterman explained that he was wearing the same tuxedo he wore when he hosted the Emmys in 1986 and proceeded to read some jokes he wrote for that year's show, tossing cards aside as he finished each joke to the glass-shattering sound familiar to viewers of his show. Letterman also paid tribute to frequent guest Regis Philbin, who died over the summer, by telling the Live! host that he was indeed in the "In Memoriam" montage.
Oliver did receive his Emmy, and a burst of gold confetti, via his magic box at his home in New York, where he's been remotely taping Last Week Tonight.
He first acknowledged the danger in the Emmys' experiment, calling it a "small bomb" that was liable to have blown up and caused a "small wildfire" in New York.
Wearing a red sweatshirt, Oliver thanked his staff, whom he said he hasn't seen in person for six months, for helping him to continue making the show amid the pandemic. He also thanked his wife and offered a glimpse of their home life, saying that she kept their two kids out of the room, save for once when his 4-year-old burst in and was told Oliver was talking to "nobody" about "police brutality."
"That doesn't sound fun," Oliver's son said.
Speaking in the virtual press room after winning, Oliver said that even though the win was Last Week Tonight's fifth in the category, "This is different from the others," before poking fun at the COVID-19-era presentation of his award.
"Mentally half my mind is on ‘How am I going to clean up all of this fucking glitter?’ But this feels very nice, a decapitated hand gave me an Emmy out of a box and that’s how I’ve always dreamt it. The other four were just too pedestrian in the way I got them so this is really really special. The thing is, I’m trying to be funny but there is something genuinely magical about a box thrusting a trophy at me."
