Jammu, May 30

Jammu and Kashmir’s fuel consumption has slumped by nearly 48 per cent following back-to-back lockdowns imposed by the Centre to contain the spread of Coronavirus since March 25.

According to official sources, all petroleum products, except LPG, have recorded vertical fall in demand as lockdown halted economic activity and travel.

“At present, the sale of petrol is nearly 65 per cent of the normal consumption, thereby recording a drop of 35 per cent, while the sale of diesel is just 52 per cent, witnessing a fall of 48 per cent,” Rajeev Yadav, state-level coordinator, Oil Industry, J&K, told The Tribune.

“The recent decision to allow more economic activities (in lockdown 4.0) has increased the sale of these products by 10-15 per cent. The sale of petrol and diesel in the month of March and April was mainly due to agricultural activities in the UT,” said Yadav.

There are a total of 530 filling stations in Jammu and Kashmir.

“The average monthly consumption of petrol in J&K is 35,000 kilolitres (KL) while it is around 65,000 KL of diesel,” Yadav informed.

Going by the official statistics, there has been a monthly fall of 12,250 KL in petrol consumption and 31,200 KL in diesel demand.

Official sources said that there were a total of 16.57 lakh vehicles in Jammu and Kashmir, including 13,008 buses, 19,092 mini buses, 45,623 taxis and 65,992 three-wheelers.

All buses, mini-buses and taxis are presently off the road due to lockdown, while the government has allowed the movement of three-wheelers in some areas in the fourth phase of the lockdown which will come to end on May 31.

Anan Sharma, president, J&K Petroleum Dealers Association, claimed that they had been suffering losses due to drastic fall in consumption of petroleum products. “Our expenses remain same but our income has come down,” he said.

Meanwhile, the UT administration has announced to increase the rate of tax on sale of petrol and diesel in J&K by Rs 2 per litre and Rs 1 per litre respectively to meet the revenue loss due to declining sale of petroleum products. The new rates would be applicable from June 1.

“The tax increase on petrol and diesel in J&K follows a similar move by the neighbouring states of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi last month. Himachal Pradesh has also enhanced rates on the sale of diesel and petrol effective from June 1,” said the official spokesperson of the UT administration.
