How will Packers use Jordan Love? Green Bay offensive coordinator sizes up possibilities - CBS Sports

The Green Bay Packers want to develop Jordan Love to be the eventual replacement for Aaron Rodgers and become their next franchise quarterback. While Love is the heir apparent to Rodgers, will the Packers have their first-round pick sit the bench all year if Rodgers stays healthy?

Offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett isn't set on Love holding a clipboard in his rookie season. Hackett doesn't rule out the idea that the team could have a set package of plays for the quarterback (see: Taysom Hill and the New Orleans Saints).

"I think everything's still so early to tell," Hackett said, via ESPN's Rob Demovsky. "Haven't even really gotten to sit in a meeting room at Lambeau. I haven't gotten to talk with him much or work face to face. I think there's so much yet to be seen. You never know. Anything can happen."

The Philadelphia Eagles have also discussed a package of plays with rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts, who will be the understudy to Carson Wentz for the next several seasons.

"He has a unique skill set that he's a great runner," Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said after the draft. "Obviously, he throws well on the run. He has a unique set of skills that we're going to take a look at as we keep developing this off-season and this advancement, so to speak, as we get ready for training camp."

Love has similar qualities to Hurts with his ability to throw on the run and extend the play. Whether Love can actually run the ball is another story, considering he maxed at 175 yards in a season and 3.6 yards per carry at Utah State.

The Packers are in the rare position where they are developing Love while still having a Super Bowl contending team, led by Rodgers. Developing Love is the long-term goal, but Green Bay is in this business to win games.

If Rodgers goes down, the Packers have to make sure Love is ready -- especially for a team that has struggled to win in his absence. Green Bay is 5-10-1 in the past 16 games Rodgers has failed to start.

"You've got to prepare everybody like they're a starter and they've got to go in there and play. So it's about winning," Hackett said. "It's about Aaron Rodgers going out there and winning a football game and then Jordan's going to just have to continually learn and continue to be a good sponge."
