Selena Gomez sat down for a lengthy interview with Zach Sang in which she spoke openly about love, her duo of new songs "Lose You to Love Me" and "Look at Her Now" and the full album that's to come.
"Lose You to Love Me" and "Look at Her Now," both released within the past week (with videos that were impressively shot on an iPhone), are "actually just kind of summing up one part of me," Gomez explained, revealing that the rest of her next full-length -- which will be her first album since 2015's Revival -- "is just me having a really good time, talking about real things and vulnerability and strength."
Gomez said she released the emotional, introspective "Lose You to Love Me" first because "I think it would have been stupid if I didn't acknowledge my feelings. It would be ... inauthentic is a better word. Because I feel like I've always been who I've been. I've never really hidden anything."
Of "Look at Her Now," she said: "I'm talking to every girl that's felt what I felt. You know that moment when you just kind of reach that point and you just want to be like, 'Actually, I'm actually good. And I feel good.' That's what it felt like for me."
The release plan was partly for herself, she said, and partly to show her supporters she's in a good place.
"I thought it was a perfect way to kind of wrap up a chapter, and I wanted it to show the vulnerability of experiencing the pain of heartbreak and then stepping into this whole other journey, which is mine ... I did it for me, but I also did it for my fans."
While Gomez didn't spill too many details about what fans will hear on the rest of the album, she did mention one more track inspired by personal growth.
"There's a song that I basically said I can't let myself let me down," she said. "I wanted to kind of interpret that as every time I feel bad, I always end up going into this spiral. And I just feed it. And I've learned over the years to take a step back from that and try to rewire your thoughts so that you're more focused on what it's gonna turn into. One of the worst moments of my life ended up being the biggest blessing of my life."
During the 40-plus-minute chat, Gomez (without naming any names from her personal life) talked about love and relationships, describing her past experience with young love and her current "super single" situation -- and how it all makes an appearance in her art.
On being in love for the first time, she said: "You're in a phase where you experience love for the first time and I think that that can be a little toxic ... You have this codependency that you think is love and then you have this addiction to the passion and the frustration with each other that you think, 'Oh, that's love' ... I believed that for a long time."
But, as she told Sang, "I've been super, super single for two years and I want to know what that love will look like next for me. I want it to be real, and I don't want it to be codependent or messy or lack of communication. I think when you get older you find people that are actually right for you, that are actually on the same wavelength."
