Could there finally be an end to the media’s criticism of Meghan Markle? With Prince Harry’s emotional statement in light of taking legal action against a tabloid and the success of their royal tour of Africa, the media may finally be backing off.
Prince Harry and Markle’s Africa trip earns rave reviews
After a seemingly never-ending run of criticism aimed at Prince Harry and Markle, from their demands for privacy to the couple flying via private jets for their summer travel, the media have finally quieted down. The reason? The Sussexes have been winning over their fans and critics during their royal tour of Africa.
First and foremost, the public and media finally got more than a glimpse of baby Archie, which instantly painted them in a better light. Additionally, the way they’ve dialed it back with following royal protocol by keeping things casual has been well received.
The media is warming up
In a discussion about the tour, Nine News Australia presenter Tom Steinfort noted: “It’s finally working well for Prince Harry and Meghan because they’re getting rave reviews for their tour of Africa with adorable Archie in tow as well.”
He added: “It’s been reported that the Duchess of Sussex is really going out of her way to be seen hugging mums and kids, wearing old recycled clothes. Even leaving, and this is interesting this part, left her $200,000 engagement ring at home to avoid making people feel uncomfortable.”
Interestingly, one of his Nine News guests commented: “I’m not going to weigh in, I think I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt, I think both of them were very passionate about these kind of causes. Prior to getting together and Meghan prior to becoming a royal was very passionate about advocating for equality with women and a lot of other things.”
She added: “I think they’ll get smashed regardless, this is what I’ve learned over the last ten years, so good on them for doing something that matters to them and I’ll leave it at that.”
Steinfort’s other guest added, “I think they’re damned if they do they’re damned if they don’t… But let’s give them a bit of a fair crack at it and let them just try and be the people that they are.”
Prince Harry’s emotional statement could make a difference
Prince Harry wrote a statement in regards to the couple taking legal action against a tabloid for publishing a private letter written by Markle. He wrote, in part: “There is a human cost to this relentless propaganda, specifically when it is knowingly false and malicious, and though we have continued to put on a brave face — as so many of you can relate to — I cannot begin to describe how painful it has been. Because in today’s digital age, press fabrications are repurposed as truth across the globe.”
“There comes a point when the only thing to do is to stand up to this behaviour, because it destroys people and destroys lives,” he noted. “Put simply, it is bullying, which scares and silences people. We all know this isn’t acceptable, at any level. We won’t and can’t believe in a world where there is no accountability for this.”
Prince Harry shared why this is so important, explaining: “Though this action may not be the safe one, it is the right one. Because my deepest fear is history repeating itself. I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditised to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces. We thank you, the public, for your continued support. It is hugely appreciated. Although it may not seem like it, we really need it.”
