Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is teaming with Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy to produce a new “Star Wars” film, one of a new wave of projects set in the universe that are expected to be announced.
Heat Vision reports that Feige had discussed a foray into the “Star Wars” universe in a late summer meeting with Kennedy and studio co-chairmen Alan Horn and Alan Bergman. Walt Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn has now issued a statement saying:
“We are excited about the projects Kathy and the Lucasfilm team are working on, not only in terms of Star Wars but also Indiana Jones and reaching into other parts of the company including Children of Blood and Bone with Emma Watts and Fox.
With the close of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together.”
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy remains in charge with no plans for any changes, so its unlikely this is a prelude to a larger role for Feige within Lucasfilm. That said, a source tells the trade that Feige has apparently told a major actor that there’s a specific role he would like that person to play when and if he makes the movie.
“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” opens this December and closes out the Skywalker saga with no new films beyond that point yet formally announced, even as several creative talents like Rian Johnson, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff have been developing new films for some time. In addition, multiple “Star Wars” TV series are in the works for the Disney+ streaming service.
The news follows on from comments by Disney chairman Bob Iger the other day to the New York Times where he admits the studio has made mistakes in the handling of the franchise: “I just think that we might’ve put a little bit too much in the marketplace too fast.”
