TROY, NY – In the second game of a double-header between Tri-City and Sussex County, Miners pitcher Max Herrmann was ejected for the use of a foreign substance.
The foreign substance in question is believed to have been spider-tack, according to several Valleycats players after the game.
In the bottom of the second inning, Valleycats manager Pete Incaviglia went out to home plate umpire Dave Simon and asked that he check the hat of Herrmann.

“It wasn’t just me, it was the entire dugout saw him going to his glove and going to his hat quite a bit,” Incaviglia said. “We kept trying to let the guy know from the dugout, ‘cut it out, cut it out’ and he kept doing it so I had to go to the umpire. They checked, he got caught and they threw him out of the game. They did what they’re supposed to do.”
“Pitchers, when they use that sort of substance, you can hear the baseball coming out of the hand, you can hear it because the grip is so tight. When they started hearing it pretty early in the game, they let me know and I started paying attention to it and we got it handled.”
Simon immediately found the substance on the brim of Herrmann’s hat and conferred with his two other umpires, Mike Williams and Warren Nicholson, leading to the ejection. Herrmann’s line on the day was 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs. There has been no word yet on whether there will be any sort of penalty or suspension.
MINERS CHECK ON COCHRAN-GILL
In the top of the seventh inning – the final inning due to it being a double-header – Trey Cochran-Gill took the mound in a save situation. During the first at-bat of the inning, Miners manager Bobby Jones requested that the umpires check Cochran-Gill for foreign substances as well.
They umpiring crew did not find anything on Cochran-Gill and he continued pitching, picking up his 18th save of the season.
“I just stick to my game-plan of doing whatever I gotta do to get my three outs,” Cochran-Gill said of the umpires checking him. “Most of us just use rosin anyway, and that’s legal, so I don’t know what he had, but it was pretty obvious for Pete to go out and have them check.”
“We were out in the ‘pen so we kind of missed out on that whole thing to begin with,” he added. “We checked them so then they had to check us, I feel like that’s all the situation was. It was just some gamesmanship, trying to slow down the game and maybe it effects us.”
The Valleycats lost the first game by a score of 4-1 and after finding themselves in a 5-0 hole after the first inning of the second game, they came back to win 9-6.
“I’m sure that after I checked somebody that he was going to check one of ours, but we got nothing to hide. Our guys aren’t using any foreign substance on the baseballs. It’s just some retaliation because he got caught, it is what it is,” Incaviglia said. “The umpires wouldn’t have thrown him out if there was a foreign substance like that.”
