Communication and game plan work come into focus in Saturday's practice game

BOZEMAN, Montana – It was a small thing, but both the offense and defense occupying the same sideline in Bobcat Stadium on Saturday marked the transition from fall camp to game preparation, with kickoff of Montana State's season opener at Wyoming less than one week away.

Today is a necessary day to work through our pregame, where's everybody going to be, how long are they going to be there, and from a game situation (perspective), having the offense out there and the defense on the sideline and vice versa, getting our special teams transitions, it was a necessary day, a good day," said Bobcat head coach Brent Vigen. "We have practice (remaining), we'll still be working against the scouts, but today was getting a lot of the fringe things as far as being clean accomplished. It's communication. It's the first time we've all been on the same sideline from a team perspective. It was all the Bobcats going against the Wyoming scouts."

The operational elements of game day, such as communication, took center stage on Saturday. "Part of it is, what's happening within a series, so the defensive coach can relay that to a defensive player, and the same with the offense, so you have that interaction," he said. "It approaches what a game will look like from a communication standpoint. That's the biggest thing that will come out of today, (along with) special teams transitions. It wasn't a situation where we're stopping practice for 15 minutes and just working on special teams. You have to get 11 guys out there and execute a play. You can get a lot accomplished."

Game planning for Wyoming started mid-week, and it was in evidence on Saturday. The Bobcats offensive and defensive units each operated against scouts running Wyoming's schemes. Vigen said his staff has much of the game plan in, but won't squander the days ahead in honing it. "We're far enough along that we've had three days of work but we still have four days left," Vigen said. "The game planning I would say is done, but as far as implementing the game plan it's probably two-thirds of the way done. Obviously we got some situational work today, but we'll get more situational (work) – third downs, red zones, goal lines – we'll get more of that as the week progresses."

Vigen said the excitement for a new season is amplified at MSU given the presence of a new staff and the void of not playing in 2020. "Typically there can be" a tendency to get over-hyped for the new season. "For us, a new staff, generally speaking, new schemes to a degree, and our guys haven't played for a long time, so those three things you say, 'We've got to hold back,' even though we might think we know Wyoming inside and out, for instance."

Vigen coached at Wyoming from 2014  through the 2020 campaign, but said his staff's focus is on the players' ability to play freely. "Even with the familiarity between both staffs, we've got to have our guys in position where they can play fast. Whatever that volume (of the game plan) is, that's where this coaching profession is way more science than it is art, know when your guys' bucket is filled as far as what they can execute. That's something we're certainly figuring out as we went through fall camp and we're pretty dialed in on what we want to do."

Montana State's season opener in War Memorial Stadium kicks off at 2 pm next Saturday, September 4. The game is streamed on several platforms, including gowyo.com, on the Mountain West Conference web site, and on the Wyoming football Facebook page.
