Amending Nonconforming Land Use Laws to Combat Illegal Rental Homes - Hawaiipublicradio

While Oʻahu waits for tighter rules on vacation rental homes, the Honolulu City Council is trying to push a bill that will allow two Diamond Head hotels to make major renovations.

The current law says structures that do not conform to their zoning area can only renovate their property up to 10% of the replacement cost.

Bill 32 proposes to make an exception for hotels in the Diamond Head residential area. This will affect the Lotus Hotel and Kaimana Beach Hotel.

Council Chair Tommy Waters introduced the bill. According to Waters, "This bill would correct the situation and allow these two hotels in that area to renovate while we’re waiting [for vacation rental laws]."

The second reading of the bill will be presented in front of the full City Council on Wednesday.
