U.S. retail sales of electricity are expected to grow by this summer as the country recovers from the coronavirus pandemic.
The Energy Department estimates electricity sales will rise 1.5 percent in summer 2021 compared to summer 2020. Much of the growth will be in the industrial and commercial sectors, boosted by increased economic activity, the EIA said.

Retail sales of electricity to the industrial sector during June, July, and August 2021 will grow by 4.5 percent this summer compared to summer 2020, the EIA said.
U.S. retail sales of electricity to the commercial sector during summer 2021 will increase by 2.6 percent compared to last summer, although they will still be 3 percent less than in 2019, the EIA said.
On the opposite end, U.S. residential sector retail sales of electricity will decrease by 0.9 percent compared to last summer due to milder summer weather, according to the EIA. That figure could be slightly offset by growth in the number of residential customers and by more people working from home than in past years.
As more people are vaccinated and stay at home less, electricity use per residential customer is expected to decline, averaging 1,090 kilowatt hours per month between June and August 2021, down 2.5 percent from last summer, according to the EIA.
