The Pacific University baseball team claimed a 10-1 win over St. Thomas (MN) on Sunday afternoon to advance to the championship round of the NCAA Regional tournament. The Boxers used a high-powered offensive attack and a masterful performance on the mound to get the win.
Pacific was led by an outstanding performance from Derek Eubanks on the mound who pitched 6.1 innings allowing 3 hits and 0 runs. Eubanks successfully was able to pitch to contact and let his defense work behind him as St. Thomas had 13 groundouts in the 26 batters that faced Eubanks.
Offensively, the Boxers came out hitting the ball hard in the top of the 1st. In the 1st inning, Pacific sent 8 batters to the plate who produced 3 singles and 2 walks to jump out to the early 2-0 lead. The Boxers tacked on another run in the 4th when Isaac Lovings walked with the bases loaded to take a 3-0 lead.
The sixth inning was the inning that blew the game open for good. Following a St. Thomas pitching change to start the inning, Ryan Krout led off the inning with a homerun to left center. Lovings stepped to the plate following an Ian Blair fly out later in the inning and was hit by the pitch putting him on 1st base with one out. Jordan Hara followed him to the plate and was able to manufacture a long at-bat that resulted in a walk. Tyler Quinn was the next batter for the Boxers. In what could be called a replay of Krout's homerun, Quinn was able to take one out of the park for a 3 run homerun, giving the Boxers a 7-0 lead. The Boxers added one more run in the 6th on a wild pitch that scored Damon Tanner from 3rd base. After a 5-run 6th inning, the Boxers led 8-0.
The Boxers were able to score two more runs in the 7th inning with a Damon Tanner RBI single and a sacrifice fly off the bat of pinch-hitting R.J. Gordon. St. Thomas scored their lone run in the 9th inning on a solo homerun.
Offensively, the Boxers were led by Ryan Krout who went 4-5 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. Joining him with double digit hits was Jordan Hara who went 2-4 with 2 RBI's. Ian Blair and Chase Anderson were each able to draw 3 walks in the game.
The Boxers will play tomorrow at 9 A.M. PST in the championship round of the NCAA Regional with the opponent TBD based on the final game this evening. Pacific will need to win once while their opponent must win twice to win the regional.
