There’s singing in the streets again in Washington Heights.
Eight years after Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning smash “In the Heights” closed on Broadway, a trailer has dropped for the upcoming, widely anticipated film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated show.
In a 2 ½-minute teaser released Thursday, 28-year-old performer Anthony Ramos stars as Usnavi, the role originally played by Miranda in its 2008 to 2011 Broadway run. Usnavi is a charismatic bodega owner in Washington Heights where “the streets were made of music,” he says.
“A dream isn’t some sparkly diamond. There’s no shortcuts. Sometimes, it’s rough,” he says in voice-over, while retaining hope for a better life as the ensemble cast dances in the uptown streets. Another character declares, “It’s time to make some noise.”
The movie, directed by Jon M. Chu (“Crazy Rich Asians”), 40, was filmed on location in Washington Heights. The top-secret ensemble cast also includes Corey Hawkins (“Straight Outta Compton”), Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera (Starz’s “Vida”), Olga Merediz (an original cast member of Broadway’s “In the Heights”), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Broadway’s “Rent”), Gregory Diaz IV (Broadway’s “Matilda the Musical”), Stephanie Beatriz (TV’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), Dascha Polanco (Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black”) and Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jimmy Smits (“Bluff City Law,” “NYPD Blue”).
In June, Miranda, 39, who went on to create the smash hit “Hamilton,” paid an emotional, surprise visit to the cast of an NYC high school production of “In the Heights.”
“In the Heights” will premiere June 26, 2020.
