Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan have officially published a trademark for their new foundation, potentially paving the way for Sussex Royal merchandise.
The trademark for Sussex Royal, The Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, was filed in June and published Dec. 19, according to a filing with the U.K.'s Intellectual Property Office.
The trademark covers a myriad of goods and services, including books, magazines, posters, apparel, charity campaigns, fundraisers, classes, training, sporting activities and counseling services.
The Sussex-branded merchandise filing could simply be a measure to block others from producing unofficial knockoff products, but it also gives the royal couple ample room to create branded items themselves.
The couple's Instagram account, @sussexroyal, highlights Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan's charity work. Every month, the account follows a handful of new charity accounts – unfollowing all previous accounts – in favor of promoting different organizations working for different causes.
In June, Harry and Meghan announced their plans to launch a separate charity foundation by the end of the year, leaving the Royal Foundation to Prince William and Duchess Kate for their own charitable work.
Since Harry and Meghan's May 2018 wedding, the younger couple has been vocal about a desire to tackle charity causes they are especially passionate about.
In its announcement, Kensington Palace said the changes are the "conclusions of a review into the structure" of the Royal Foundation, the charitable umbrella organization originally created for Will and Kate and Harry; Meghan was added after she married Harry.
"Later this year the Royal Foundation will become the principal charitable and philanthropic vehicle for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge," the palace statement said. "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will establish their own new charitable foundation with transitional operating support from The Royal Foundation. In addition both couples will continue to work together on projects in the future, including on The Foundation’s mental health program, Heads Together."
Why does this matter? Because charity work is one of the main jobs of any senior royal. This is especially true for Harry, who is not likely to be a future king like his brother and thus is expected to have more time to devote to good causes.
Through their joint foundation, Harry established the Invictus Games for wounded warriors; they helped begin the process of destigmatizing mental illness through Heads Together; and they set up Shout, Britain's first text-based crisis-support service.
"The Foundation’s innovative ethos, ability to convene, and its incubator style has proven to be incredibly powerful and successful," the palace statement said.

Will and Kate will continue this sort of work, including a mental health program, Heads Up, in partnership with the Football Association; United for Wildlife, which runs a global task force fighting the illegal wildlife trade; and Mentally Healthy Schools, which supports teachers and staff to improve child mental health.
"They are also developing new initiatives on the environment and support for children and families which The Foundation expects to announce in the coming year," the palace statement said.
