The Flash has successfully carved itself a place on network television for six years with Grant Gustin under the red cowl, but spotting the Scarlet Speedster on the big screen for a standalone flick has not come as swiftly. Ezra Miller signed on to star in The Flash for Warner Bros back in 2014, and the movie finally looks to have a release date that will actually stop and stay put: July 1, 2022.
Warner Bros. officially announced The Flash’s summer 2022 release date, along with the Matrix 4, now wildly dated on the same day as another 2021 Keanu Reeves’ flick. After years of delays (it was originally slated to come out in spring 2018), the DC standalone film recently settled on IT director Andy Muschietti and Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson. The date looks like it will fit right into Ezra Miller’s busy schedule since he’s set to reprise his role of Credence Barebone when the cameras start rolling on Fantastic Beasts 3 in spring 2020.
Even prior to Fantastic Beasts being a bump in the road, the original DC lineup was disrupted by the problems Justice League faced when Zack Snyder had to leave his vision after suffering a family tragedy. Joss Whedon was brought on to pick up the pieces, but two years after the release of the team-up movie, fans are still hoping to see The Snyder Cut.
Since the Justice League mess, Warner Bros has greatly restructured its big-screen strategy. Recent DC projects have been standalone origin stories – including Joker, a gritty drama that didn’t pay attention to the comic book origins and has been breaking huge box office records since its release.
Some remnants of the original Justice League team are still very much in play, such as Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, but there hasn’t been much talk about the rest of the gang. Ben Affleck’s Batman will be replaced by Robert Pattinson for Matt Reeves’ 2021 movie centered on the Caped Crusader. The future of Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg isn’t clear.
