Both the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Food and Drug Administration are telling parents not to use certain brands of powdered baby formula — and to avoid certain batches of those brands.
The FDA has launched an investigation into complaints of infant illnesses coming from the Abbott Laboratories production plant in Sturgis, Michigan, and possible contamination from Cronobacter — a rare but potentially deadly bacteria for newborns. Abbott has started a voluntary recall of certain powdered formulas, but the FDA is telling parents not to use Similac, Alimentum or Elecare powdered formulas with a combination of certain data on the labels:
*The code’s first two digits are 22 through 37
*The code on the container contains K8, SH or Z2
*The expiration date is April 2022 or later
Flint Hills Community Health Center is encouraging clients and residents to take the affected formula to their local vendor, who should have protocols in place for handling exchanges, refunds or other items as part of the recall — but because of the scope of the recall, replacement formula may not be immediately available.
If your children have symptoms — fever, poor feeding, crying or very low energy — take them to your medical provider as soon as possible.
