Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price entered a residential treatment facility in October for substance use, he revealed in an Instagram post on Tuesday. Price completed a 30-day stay in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program, leaving the program on Nov. 6.
“Over the last few years I have let myself get to a very dark place and I didn’t have the tools to cope with that struggle,” Price said in the post. “Last month I made the decision to enter a residential treatment facility for substance use.
“Things had reached a point that I realized I needed to prioritize my health for both myself and for my family. Asking for help when you need it is what we encourage our kids to do, and it was what I needed to do.
“I am working through years of neglecting my own mental health which will take some time to repair; all I can do is take it day by day. With that comes some uncertainty with when I will return to play,”
Price went on to write that he appreciated the overwhelming support, adding: “I please ask that the media and our hockey community continue to respect our privacy at this time. Your support and respect of this so far has been a critical piece to my recovery.”
Price, 34, has yet to play this season, his 15th in the NHL. He was at Montreal's training facility on Tuesday.
"He's doing good," Montreal coach Dominique Ducharme told reporters. "Carey was in ... it was good for me to see him and see how he's doing and for the guys too to see their teammate back. Like I said before, we have a good group of guys and they care about each other."
Ducharme added that there will be many steps that need to be taken before Price, who had knee surgery in the offseason, would be returning to action.
"I think it's important we focus on that first before going on the road with the team," Ducharme said.
