Drill, handcart, beer tent set: In the “rental shop” in the Hessian Maintal, things are stored that you need now and then, but not every day. Registered users have a selection of almost 900 items at their disposal, which they can borrow for a membership fee of two euros per month and a deposit. The number of interested parties has increased steadily since the store opened four years ago, and there are now around 300 users, as co-founder Florian Grünert says. They come from all over the area, including Frankfurt, which is 15 kilometers away. The goal: less consumption and more sustainability.

These goals are also being pursued by a day of action next Saturday (November 27th), the “Kauf-Nix-Tag”. Following the example of the worldwide “Buy-nothing-Day”, he calls every year at the end of November to refrain from consumption for 24 hours. In the USA, the day falls deliberately on the day after Thanksgiving, “Black Friday”, when the Christmas business traditionally begins there and retailers fuel the consumer frenzy with many special offers. Germany and other European countries then follow with the call to buy nothing one day later, on the last Saturday of the month.

The idea met with approval from the founder of the rental shop, Grünert. “We live beyond our means in Europe,” he says. Electrical appliances, party or camping accessories, gardening equipment or tools that you rarely need do not have to be bought new, but can be borrowed and shared. Personally, he is particularly careful to only buy things that he will use over a long period of time. For Grünert, owning less means freedom: “Then I don’t have to worry about things”, he says. At the same time he saves money.

Concepts of conscious and sustainable consumption have become an increasingly broader trend, as Theresa Schleicher, retail expert at the Zukunftsinstitut (Frankfurt am Main / Vienna) says. “It has grown out of a niche into a social phenomenon.” The corona pandemic has intensified the development because it has led to a concentration on the essentials, more community spirit and climate and environmental awareness.

The companies can no longer avoid this and develop corresponding offers. Lending and circular concepts, for example in the fashion industry, and recyclable or reduced packaging in online retail are examples. Schleicher observed a real optimism.

And how can you exercise reluctance to consume despite bargain deals? The blogger Esther Stark from Hungen in Central Hesse has put together tips for this. She is a minimalist and shares her experiences on social networks like Youtube and Facebook. Throw-away mentality and reports of scandalous production conditions in the textile industry would have shaken them years ago. Her goal, too, is to only own what she really uses. And to buy used if possible.

The 38-year-old recommends writing wishes down on a list first and only picking it up again after a long period of time. “It is often the case that I simply delete things again because I know that I really don’t want that at all.”

She used to be a frustration buyer, reports the blogger. Shopping should compensate for a stressful week. “But the feeling of elation was often gone when I left the department store,” she recalls. Often it was things that she didn’t use and that still took up space at home, such as cosmetics or clothing. She now has a better feeling for what she really needs: For relaxation, for example, sport or a hot bath are more suitable than shopping.
