Councilmember Mike Bonin and LA County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl are starting what they say is the community input process for a mixed development project proposed at the West LA Civic Center (https://westlacommons.com/#project).
The project proposes a total of 926 residential units, including nearly 500 market-rate apartments and more than 430 service-enhanced affordable units. The affordable housing will serve families, seniors, and people experiencing homelessness.
There will also be a 73,400-square-foot municipal office building along with 41,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. The complex will include the redevelopment of a 20,900-square-foot community center on-site.
AvalonBay Communities and Abode Communities were selected for the redevelopment of the eight acres.
According to Bonin and Kuehl, the community input process will comprise of a number of different opportunities for members of the community to provide input.
Unlike the controversial Reese Davidson Project in Venice, the project will go through an Environmental Impact Review process. The review will analyze the environmental effects of the proposed project, identify possible ways to minimize those effects, and describe reasonable alternatives to the primary proposed design plan. The public will have an opportunity to provide input on the Draft Environmental Impact Report.
Construction is currently anticipated to begin in 2023 and be completed in 2028.
Bonin and Kuehl say opportunities for engagement will include town hall meetings, community presentations, design charrettes, and more. All engagement opportunities are supposed to be widely communicated to the public. You can visit https://westlacommons.com/#contact to receive project updates.
