Biggby Coffee, a nearly 300-unit chain based in Michigan, has formed the One BIGG Island in Space initiative to source coffee directly from sustainable farmers around the world.

The company plans to serve 50% farm-direct coffee by 2023 and 100% farm-direct coffee in the following years in line with its mission to help franchisees, employees, customers and communities build a life they love, according to a company press release.

Biggby Coffee co-founder and CEO Bob Fish, and his wife, Michelle, created One BIGG Island in Space so they could travel the world in search of coffee that brings people together and serves the planet. The goal is to partner with coffee farmers around the world who run a humane, sustainable, and high-quality operation and purchase directly from them.

"Most coffee is bought through a series of brokers," Bob Fish said in the release. "Each additional broker increases the price. By eliminating them, we're able to pass that money onto the farmer. That farmer now has the resources to pay their workers more, use better farming practices and invest in their communities."

The program has high standards when it comes to choosing farm partners.

"We're interested in how they treat their workers — what housing is like, whether they have running water, whether they have meals and food provided," Michelle Fish said. "Then there's the planet component — how they're treating the soil, is there soil conservation, are they composting? The third criteria is simply, 'Are they investing in the community they live in?'"

Miriam Morales, the owner of Recreo Coffee in Massachusetts, said the couple puts the farm-to-cup idea into practice.

"They also want to know how the farm and my family have improved because of this partnership, which is truly their motivation," she said in the release. "I've been in coffee for a long time, and the partnership is a dream come true."

Bob Fish said he was on a journey to discover and understand the people and farms that make coffee.

"By buying coffee in a conscious way from sustainable farms, the Biggby nation can make a meaningful difference," he said. "We're really looking forward to expanding our travels and bringing more farmers on board with the program this year."
