MONMOUTH, Ore. – The game started out just how the Western Oregon University football team wanted. Midway through the first quarter, the Wolves took an early 7-0 lead off a TD run by Omari Land. After that, Central Washington responded in a big way scoring 42 unanswered points on their way to claiming the 45-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon at McArthur Field.

The Wolves (2-4, 1-1 GNAC) started the game strong getting a quick three-and-out by the defense to start their first offensive possession at the WOU 18.

WOU moved right down the field, with Ryan Worthley completing an eight-yard pass to Thomas Wright and after Land rushed for four yards, Land caught a pass for eight yards. Faced with a third-and-five at the WOU 46, Worthley found Andrew Valladares who broke free for a 15-yard catch down to the CWU 39. Worthley later found Damon Hickok just two plays later for a big run and catch of 23 yards that had WOU in the red zone. After Worthley avoided pressure and ran for eight yards to setup a first-and-goal at the five, Land who finish off the drive. Following a one-yard loss, Land took it in from six yards out for the opening points of the game leaving WOU with a 7-0 lead with 7:24 to play in the opening quarter.

Central Washington (4-2, 2-0 GNAC) started to get the offense going on the next drive. After picking up a couple of third downs, the Wildcats found the end zone on a 29-yard pass from Quincy Glasper to Darius Morrison to tie the game at seven near the end of the first quarter.

WOU looked to answer right back. Following a 24-yard kickoff return by Marquis Sampson had the Wolves at their 38, Worthley went right back to Sampson. Worthley lofted a perfect pass over the coverage to a waiting Sampson for what would turn out to be a 32-yard gain down to the CWU 30. The Wildcats' defense responded after that forcing WOU into a third-and-12 when Worthley found Valladares for eight yards to setup a manageable fourth-and-four. Looking at a potential 41-yard field goal attempt, the Wolves went for it. Worthley dropped back and as the pressure forced him up in the pocket, he took off. He looked to have the first down in sight, but a saving tackle by Zach Stecklein kept Worthley a few yards shot of the line to gain and turned the ball over on downs.

After watching the CWU defense come up with a stop, it was WOU's turn for a big play on defense.

On the very next snap after the turnover on downs, Glasper tried to hit a receiver out near midfield, but Joey Sinclair was there to deflect the pass. As the ball went into the air, Billy Nelson was there to record his third interception of the season at the WOU 32.

After WOU ended up punting it back to the Wildcats, CWU went on a 12 play, 73-yard drive to take their first lead of the game. During the drive, the Wildcats picked up a third down and a fourth down conversion before finishing the drive with another TD pass to Morrison for the 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter.

A special teams play loomed large on the next drive. With WOU forced to punt deep in their own territory, the Wildcats were able to get pressure on the kick and block the punt that eventually went out-of-bounds at the WOU 4. On the next play, CWU completed a four-yard TD pass to take a 21-7 lead.

The WOU defense made one last stop before halftime. With the Wildcats on the move with a first-and-goal at the WOU 5 and time ticking down, CWU went with a quick snap and passed for the end zone. Sinclair was there as he intercepted the pass in the end zone to leave it a 21-7 lead for CWU at halftime.

Central Washington kept the momentum going right into the second half. The Wildcats scored on two straight offensive possessions to move ahead 35-7. The defense then added a 29-yard interception return for a touchdown to move to a 42-7 lead late in the third quarter.

After picking up a third-and-three on a pass from Gannon Winker to Wright for four yards, WOU would be later be faced with a fourth-and-one at the WOU 45. The Wolves went with a handoff to Valladares and he broke free around the left side of the line and went untouched for the 55-yard TD run to leave it a 42-14 lead for the Wildcats.
