September 3 (Renewables Now) - Renewable energy plants have produced enough to meet 63% of Portugal's electricity consumption in the period January-August 2021, data from power utility Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN) shows.

Hydro and wind had the largest contribution, covering 28% and 25% of the national demand, respectively. Biomass energy followed with 7% and photovoltaic (PV) with 3.6%.

REN's data shows that non-renewable electricity accounted for 30%, led by natural gas with 28% and coal with 2%. Energy imports met the remaining 7% of domestic consumption.

In August alone, renewable power generation supplied 42% of domestic consumption. Non-renewable sources and imports were responsible for the remaining 32% and 26%, respectively.

Portugal’s overall electricity consumption went up 2% year-on-year in the year-to-date period in question, or 2.7% when correcting for temperature and number of working days, the utility noted.
