LISBON — A Salem man was sentenced to two years in prison by Judge Megan Bickerton after continual methamphetamine use.
Jonathan F. Butts, 44, Jennings Avenue, Salem, appeared for sentencing in Common Pleas Court on Monday, where he told his defeay he was there.
Throughout the hearing, Butts mumbled responses to Bickerton’s questions and stated the last time he was in court for his plea hearing things had been so rushed he did not understand what he was signing. Bickerton reminded him she had gone over everything with him at the plea hearing.
“I’m stupid I guess,” Butts offered.
Which lead to Bickerton countering “You’re not going to have a clear head until you quit using meth.”
Butts had pleaded guilty in March to illegal assembly or possession of the chemicals for the manufacture of drugs and aggravated possession of drugs for having methamphetamines on Nov. 4, 2019. Assistant County Prosecutor Alec Beech recommended the two-year prison term stating when authorities came to Butts’ home that day, they found many of the chemicals needed to make meth and the overwhelming chemical smell in the home leading to medical treatment for Butts.
Even during his pre-sentencing investigation, Butts had admitted he had recently used meth.
“I can’t get rid of it,” Butts said, referring to his addiction problems.
“It’s a challenger,” Bickerton said. “It’s going to be a challenge for the rest of your life.”
Butts continued to try to speak and often slurred his words in the courtroom, which Bickerton noted may be due to his continued drug use. Bickerton went on to say whatever health problems Butts has, including from a prior accident, using meth will not help him.
“Methamphetamine is not a treatment for anything that is wrong with you,” she said. “It is going to kill you.”
Besides a two year prison sentence, Butts was ordered to pay a mandatory fine of $5,000. He was credited with 33 days served and taken into custody.
