Xcel Energy asked some of its commercial and industrial customers to curb their electricity usage Thursday afternoon, as air conditioners across the Twin Cities worked overtime to keep residents cool during this week’s heatwave.
Extreme temperatures can strain the electric grid, and the Minneapolis-based utility gives certain types of customers a break on their monthly bills if they agree to participate in its interruptible electricity program, said Xcel Energy spokeswoman Julie Borgen.
About 2,000 businesses, schools and other program participants were asked to cut their power consumption between 2 and 6 p.m. Thursday.
Among them was the St. Anthony-New Brighton School District, which dismissed students early to comply with Xcel’s request, according to the district’s website.
The heatwave prompted St. Paul Public Schools to end its academic year on Tuesday, three days earlier than planned.
Although Xcel offers a similar program for residential customers, the company has not yet asked them to cut their power usage, Borgen said.
Xcel’s website offers several tips on reducing energy consumption while cooling your home, such as installing ceiling fans that run counter-clockwise, keeping interior doors open to circulate cool air and drawing shades and blinds to keep the sun out during the day.
