WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) -- Friday night and Saturday, Miami police broke up crowds by using what is believed to be pepper balls. The NBC affiliate in Ft. Myers is reporting that this is a response to a spring break crowd not obeying the 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.
The curfew went into effect Saturday, starting at 8 p.m.. The curfew forces restaurants to stop outdoor seating entirely during the three-day emergency period. The curfew was put into place to stop the likely spread of COVID-19 caused by these gatherings.
On Saturday night, a freelance reporter captured a video of the police using pepper balls to break up the crowds.
Locals, business owners, and tourists have expressed their disappointment with how the crowd was handled.
