The general director of the Food Industry, Jose Miguel Herrero, participated in the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Ecovalia, the Spanish professional association for organic production, where he spoke about the 'Analysis of the characterization and projection of Spanish organic production in 2019' report, which was just published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food.
The report shows how the organic farming sector continues with its strong growth process and is becoming an important differentiated food sector within the entire Spanish food system.
According to the document, the estimated value of organic production at its origin surpassed 2,310 million euro in 2019, i.e. 8.32% more than in the previous year. 77.72% of this value corresponds to organic production of plant origin and 22.28% to that of animal origin.
According to these data, Spain is the world's 10th biggest market for organic products in terms of the total value of organic sales; the 11th market in terms of per capita consumption of organic products and in terms of percentage of organic consumption over total food consumption.
Spanish consumer spending on organic products reached 2,363 million euro, which is 8.4% more than in the previous year and nearly 2.24% of all of Spain's total food consumption, including homes and the catering sector. Per capita consumption reached 50.22 euro/ inhabitant/ year, i.e. 7.70% higher than in the previous year.
The most consumed organic products in Spain were organic fresh fruits, which accounted for 15.5% of the organic shopping basket, and fresh vegetables, with 13.9%.
Moreover, exports reached 995 million euro, 5.1%. more than in the previous year while imports totaled 1,070 million euro (+1.90%), which continues the negative trade balance there was in 2018, although with a lower increase in imports than in that year.
Herrero stressed the importance of the moment we are living in: "we are in a historic decade in which Europe set the goal of devoting 25% of the useful agricultural area to organic production. We are moving towards a sustainable model that is committed to the environment."
Jose Miguel Herrero said that, after summer, the ministry would carry out the most important campaign to promote organic production. Chef Jose Andres will participate in the promotion campaign that will be launched under the slogan: 'The richest country in the world'.
