(KWWL) — Alliant Energy, Cedar Falls Utilities (CFU) and MidAmerican Energy are assisting customers on how you can save energy while keeping your home warm and save money.

Alliant Energy

Alliant Energy is projecting sufficient supply to meet natural gas/electric needs of customers. With more energy usage however, heating bills are likely to rise. Alliant Energy encourages customers to apply for financial assistance if needed.

Customers needing support help pay their bill should call 211 or visit alliantenergy.com/energyassistance for details. Customers can track their energy usage through My Account to avoid any surprises on their bills.

Alliant Energy offers more energy saving tips at alliantenergy.com/energyefficiency and powerhousetv.com. Safety information is available at alliantenergy.com/safety.

If customers have an outage or would like to check on the status of an outage, they can visit: alliantenergy.com/outage or call 1-800-ALLIANT (1-800-255-4268).

Alliant Energy saving tips:

  • Turn your thermostat down at night and when you’re away
  • Open shades during the day to let the sun come in. Close the shades at night
  • Seal windows and block drafts around doorways
  • Turn off fans
  • Keep garage doors closed
  • Limit opening exterior doors
  • Make sure air vents and radiators are not blocked
  • Keep the intake and exhaust clear of ice and snow
  • Do not use your oven or a grill to heat your home

Cedar Falls Utilities (CFU)

CFU is joining other utilities across Iowa asking customers to conserve natural gas until at least Friday, February 19th.

The extreme cold across the country have led to increased natural gas demand and natural gas wells are freezing in the southwest limiting supply. The price of natural gas has risen significantly.

"This is an unprecedented weather event impacting natural gas utility customers throughout the Midwest," said Steve Bernard, CFU General Manager.

Due to record regional natural gas demand and supply restrictions, CFU urges customers to reduce natural gas usage. CFU will also let customers know in advance of any billing changes. CFU is working with area commercial and industrial customers to limit natural gas.

"We are asking our community to work together to minimize the impact of this extreme weather event. Every conservation effort by our customers reduces the cost to the community," said Bernard.

CFU energy saving tips:

  • Turn your thermostat down five degrees from normal setting
  • Avoid running gas fireplaces, garages or bonus space heaters
  • Check windows, doors and turn off ventilation fans after use
  • Look for other opportunities around your home to limit natural gas usage

MidAmerican Energy

MidAmerican Energy is asking their customers to conserve natural gas use as weather affects supplies around the country. MidAmerican's systems are operating normally, but the flow of natural gas to the area has been affected due to frozen wells in the southern U.S.

MidAmerican Energy is working with their largest customers to ensure gas service for residential customers. MidAmerican Energy expects the issue to resolve itself as temperatures go up in the next few days.

MidAmerican encourages any customer who is experiencing financial difficulties to call 888-427-5632 to discuss payment options.

MidAmerican Energy saving tips:

  • Turn the thermostat down a few degrees
  • Check furnace filter
  • Clear any snow and ice from outdoor plastic intake and exhaust vent pipes
  • Check interior supply and return air vents, baseboards and radiators
  • Limit the use of space heaters when possible and keep three feet away from other objects. Shut off when you leave the area or go to sleep
  • Keep window curtains closed at night and open during the day
  • Consider weather stripping for windows or doors
  • Don't use a gas stove to heat your home and don't run a generator indoors
  • Have a working carbon monoxide detector; if you suspect CO poisoning, call 911, get fresh air and stay outside/elsewhere until help arrives
  • If you smell natural gas, leave the area right away, get to a safe distance, call MidAmerican Energy (800-595-5325) and call 911
  • Hire a professional to look at your furnace once a year
