Reader's View: Plastic bags don't have to be single-use - Duluth News Tribune

serongyu.blogspot.com

The plastic shopping bags being banned in Duluth are continually referred to as "single-use” plastic bags. No, they aren't single-use. Those bags can be used multiple times. Though that will not keep them out of the landfills permanently, reusing them can reduce the number in the landfills — and in the trees, ditches, and ocean. Some bags are made of heavier plastic and will survive many reuses.

Here are some additional uses: Bring them back to the store with you and put your groceries in them on subsequent trips. (During COVID-19, you may need to bag it yourself; many cashiers won’t touch anything brought into the store.) You can even keep them in your pocket so germs stay off them in the store; and then you won’t forget them in the car. Use them to line wastebaskets. Why spend more than a nickel on bags just for that? Dog owners probably can think of a second use. They can be laundry bags in suitcases, taking up almost no space before use or when filled with items that were already in the suitcase.

Readers might think of other ways to reuse them, remembering that reuse is a part of the recycle circle. However, to make this work, don’t tie them in a knot you can't open in order to keep your groceries from falling out. Doing that requires ripping the bag apart to empty; a half knot will do the job.

Due to COVID-19 again, it’s a good idea to hang a bag for a day or two, just in case it got contaminated, before reusing it. Summer sun reduces the hang time to an hour or less.

If you believe in the goal of reducing plastic-bag use, make every bag a multi-use instead of single-use bag.
