SDG&E asks customers to reduce power consumption as temperatures spike toward 100 - The San Diego Union-Tribune

SDG&E is asking customers to sharply curtail electrical use from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday to help the California Independent System Operator — which runs the state grid — have enough power to help the region get through the heat wave.

The request is part of a so-called energy FLEX Alert issued by CAISO, which is dealing with extremely hot weather throughout Southern California.

Steve Berberich, the chief executive at the CAISO, said with statewide energy conservation efforts, “I think we can get through today without any kind of grid interruption.”

The CAISO also issued a “restricted maintenance” order, which directs generators and transmission operators to postpone any planned outages for routine maintenance in order to make sure all grid assets are available for use.

San Diego County is in the third day of a heat wave. By 11 a.m. Thursday, the temperature had hit 99 degrees near Miramar MCAS, 98 at Camp Pendleton, 97 at Montgomery Field, 96 at Del Mar, 96 in the Claremont section of San Diego, 95 near Lake Hodges and 93 at San Diego International Airport. A couple of weather stations off the beach at Del Mar reported highs of at least 102.

“Across the county the relative humidity is below 20 percent and in some areas it is below 15 percent,” said Phil Gonsalves, a weather service forecaster. “That dry air mass is letting temperatures rise. There also is a weak offshore breeze.”

The county might be seeing the maximum highs for the coast. An onshore breeze is beginning to kick in.

Rain review: NWS says that San Diego International Airport received 13.60 inches of rain during the one year period ending on Sept. 30. The average is 10.34 inches.
