JACKSON, Wyo. — Though many Wyomingites have been using more energy at home in recent months, overall energy consumption in Wyoming has dropped during the pandemic, specifically in the commercial and industrial sectors.

Using data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), CommercialCafe looked at the year-over-year changes in energy sales overall and by sector across the country, comparing Q2 2019 to Q2 2020. They also included data on the main energy sources.

Here’s how Wyoming compares to the nation as a whole:

  • In Wyoming, overall energy consumption dropped 13.7% year-over-year.
  • The commercial and the industrial sectors both registered a decrease of —13.1% y-o-y and 18% y-o-y, respectively.
  • Meanwhile, energy consumption in the residential sector increased by 4.1% y-o-y.
  • In comparison, overall energy consumption decreased by 4% nationally. Unsurprisingly, the commercial sector saw the biggest drop—11% y-o-y, while residential consumption increased by 8% Y-o-Y.
Between April and June 2020, energy from renewable sources made up 23% of the total energy sales, as opposed to coal’s 16% contribution. Photo: CommercialCafe
