The Directorate General for Agriculture of the European Commission has published the latest data on tomato production, trade and prices in the EU on its periodic dashboard. As stated in the document, the average European prices registered by the Commission in the main producing countries (Spain, Italy, France and the Netherlands) show an overall drop compared to the previous season.

For Italy and Spain, the monthly average prices in the period from January to July have remained below the average of the previous season, while for France and the Netherlands they have stayed above those of the previous season in the first months of the year, but have then fallen below them in the following months, from April to July.

In July, all countries, except for the Netherlands, report lower average prices than in June 2020. In Spain's case, there is a 9% drop, down to 59 Euro / 100 kg, while Italy and France report 4% and 3% drops, respectively, with average prices amounting to 73 Euro / 100 kg in Italy and 104 Euro / 100 kg in France. In the case of the Netherlands, the average price in July was 51 Euro / 100 kg, which represented an increase of 33% compared to the average price for June.

When it comes to tomato production by country, Italy is still the main European grower with just over 5 million tons, followed by Spain, which totaled 5 million tons. A little further away are the rest of the countries analyzed: Portugal, Greece, France and Romania, whose production oscillates around one million tons. In the case of tomato production for fresh consumption, Spain ranks first with about 2 million tons, followed by the Netherlands with about 900,000 tons.

As far as trade is concerned, the Commission has analyzed the data on the import of tomatoes from third countries, highlighting the strong increase in fresh tomato imports from Morocco over the last nine seasons, reaching close to 500,000 tons in 2019 (486,878 tons). There are also data on the EU's tomato exports to the main third countries from the start of the season, in October 2019, until June 2020. Switzerland tops this ranking, with 88,649 tons exported, and is followed by Norway, with more than 27,000 tons, Belarus, with 14,333 tons and Ukraine, with 6,712 tons.
