Quincy Fire Department tests to improve air consumption rate - WGEM

To the Quincy Fire Department, learning more about their firefighters' air consumption rates change everything because when a firefighter enters a burning building their air tank becomes their lifeline.

QFD put their firefighters under a rigorous air consumption rate training session on Friday to see how long they could possibly stay in a fire.

Firefighter Michael Dade said the department is always conducting research on how to help protect the community.

“To take a piece of equipment that is such a huge part of firefighting and something that we are so familiar with. And to purposely put ourselves in unfamiliar grounds is the essence of what it means to constantly improve to provide a better service.”

Deputy Chief Demond Dade said this training will not only help his firefighters but it could help save your loved one.

“We have to understand how much air we have left before we run out. We do have alarms and stuff that are built into the air packs. But when we get to an alarm we are at an emergency reserve status on our bottles. So we need to train and make sure we get out of the house fires before those alarms go off.”

Due to the Fire Departments' crew system, if one man has to come out they all come out.

Dade said improving the air consumption could help them all stay inside longer.

“This training allows us to have a baseline of information. For one has a better understanding of how much work can be done at that time that we are in the building. And it gives us a good basis and foundation of how to improve those work times inside the building.”
