The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s list of hand sanitizers that consumers should not use has increased again - to more than 130 brands.
The agency, since mid-June, has been alerting consumers to hand sanitizers it has identified that either contain the toxic methanol, also known as wood alcohol, were found to be “subpotent” or contained “microbial contanimation.”
Some of the companies have issued recalls for their products. The FDA has been able to stop some of the products from reaching the U.S. market with import alerts.
With the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States came a surge in demand for hand sanitizers. Health officials have advised people to wash their hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds to avoid spreading the coronavirus. In the absence of soap and water, the use of hand sanitizer is advised.
As demand for hand sanitizer surged, so did companies manufacturing it.
FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hain said in a statement, “Unfortunately, there are some companies taking advantage of the increased usage of hand sanitizer during the coronavirus pandemic and putting lives at risk by selling products with dangerous and unacceptable ingredients. Consumers and health care providers should not use methanol-containing hand sanitizers.”
The FDA maintains a list on its website. Each entry lists the name of the manufacturer, the distributor, the date the FDA added it to the list, the product, NDC numbers if available and the status.
Most of the toxic or subpotent hand sanitizers were made in Mexico, but not all of them.
