HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) - Officials in Huntington County are notifying residents of Andrews not to use the public water supply after it tested ten times above limits for the chemical vinyl chloride.
Andrews city officials and attorneys hosted a town hall Saturday at the municipal building.
"Not being able to turn the water on to brush my teeth, or wash your hands with all the COVID going on," Andrews resident, Pamela Reed, said. "So it's kind of scary when I go to stick my hand under the water and I realize, oh no I cant do that."
The town of Andrews has filed a lawsuit, the second one in the past four years, in regards to the area's water contamination. The lawsuit was filed by the town of Andrews as an emergency motion to replace their water wells and implement a back up water system.
Representing attorney Tom Barnard says the contamination is coming from United Technologies Automotive Plant and a gas station on Main Street.
“Having looked at that information, they came to use and said, this is an emergency and we need to act quickly," Barnard said. "So we filed an emergency motion asking the court to order the responsible parties to take immediate action to make sure this water is safe.”
Barnard says residents should not drink the water and should avoid using it at all. However, he says if needed they should use cold water to prevent the vinyl chloride from vaporizing.
"The reason we're here today is to answer questions of concern," Barnard said. "By the residents who have just been told in the past 24 hours they cant drink their water, I'd be standing over there wondering the same questions, why cant I drink my water and when can I start drinking my water."
Notices were sent out late Friday and posted, as well, on websites and social media accounts, including that of the county's homeland security office and the sheriff's department.
ADVISORY:
Andrews residents are being advised to not use the town's water for drinking or cooking until further advised. A test has revealed that the water contains contaminants above Federal Safe Drinking Water Standards.
Huntington County Emergency Management wants to thank the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) for their quick action. Within an hour of Huntington County EMA contacting IDHS, they had several pallets of water en route to Andrews. Information will be available later concerning the distribution of the water as well as the length of time the do-not-use advisory is in effect. Those affected can call 260-519-3701 with questions. **Please see the following information**
There will be an information meeting for residents with the town attorney’s Saturday at 2 o’clock at town hall. Come to the garage side of the building (north side). The town will be distributing water from 4 pm - 6 pm Saturday and from noon until 6 pm on Sunday. Thanks to all for your patience. |
