Vanessa Lachey defends her 'awkward' interview after she was asked about sending Jessica Simpson a gift basket

Vanessa Lachey is clearing the air following her recent Today Show interview.

The actress, 39, made waves after clarifying during an interview that she did not send Jessica Simpson a gift basket, after Hoda Kotb mentioned she thought the gesture was nice.

Vanessa and Nick were being interviewed by Hoda for their new Netflix dating show, Love Is Blind, when the TV host brought up the gift.

'I interviewed Jessica Simpson for her book, Open Book, and she talked about how she has her life with her husband and her children, and she was really, really happy for y'all,' Kotb said during the interview.

She also had added that Jessica had received 'something beautiful when we had our children.'

While her husband was chatting about his ex-wife's book, Vanessa appeared very puzzled about the 'gift' in question.

'I feel bad, I'm sorry, you said somebody sent her...it wasn't us, but thank you, whoever sent it,' she explained.

And while Hoda while trying to get to the bottom of it, Nick candidly asked his wife 'What did you send?'

'I didn't...I don't know her address,' Vanessa explained. 'But thank you whoever sent it from us.'

Afterwards, users online decided to weigh in on the situation which caused Vanessa to speak out about the criticism.

'Anyone else catch@VanessaLachey deny doing something nice for @JessicaSimpson on the today show? I feel like that was 10000% not necessary... and super awkward,' one user on Twitter commented.

The actress responded: 'How. I'd love to know. Truly... I think it's weird accepting credit for something you didn't do or give. Even weirder to bring up something so random. Just giving facts. Wanted to make sure we were truthful.'

In another tweet she went on to question if she should have just played along saying: 'Should I have pretended to give it? Dang. Can we get a do over and I will tell them it was big beautiful basket. ;-). Kidding, sorry you think that, just wanted to be truthful. That's all. But the gift sounds lovely!'

She wrote that while she was filming the movie and still married to Nick she 'felt a force drawing us together' after sharing a hug with Knoxville on their first day on set.

'I wondered why I was open to this,' she wrote in her book. 'I was already living in a distrustful situation with Nick, and now I was afraid I couldn't trust myself.'
