Now that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have left their royal duties behind to live a more normal life, what does that mean for Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge? The couple has already started the year off with multiple engagements and one royal insider believes that Kate has become more “front and center” in the royal family as William pursues charity work.
Why Kate now has more input
With Prince Harry and Meghan gone from the scene, it’s believed that Prince William and Kate may have more responsibilities. Despite the heavy load, Prince William reportedly wants to continue to make his charity work a priority.
“William knows he will have a lot more work this year and is happy to perform whatever duties the Queen asks of him,” a source told The Sun. “But he is determined that won’t be to the detriment of his charity work.”
The insider pointed to The Royal Foundation, in particular, includes a program for mental health, a matter that’s very important to William. “Since his brother Harry and Meghan left the Foundation last year, the work it does has been very much in the model of how both William and Kate want it to be,” the source noted.
Their dedication to this work, the source shared, includes the couple driving the foundation’s agenda and attending meetings, adding, “Kate is front and center now where in the past she didn’t have as much of an input.”
The source added: “They are very ambitious about what they want to achieve. Performing their royal duties remains incredibly important to them and it always will. But the Foundation is where their passion lies and where they believe they can have a huge impact in 2020.”
Prince William is passionate about the foundation’s work
Prince William has a busy year ahead of him and he’s making certain his foundation work remains a top priority, with the source noting he has “clear and determined” ambitions this year.
“Put simply he wants to help bring about a crusade on the issue and feels incredibly passionate about it,” the source explained. “Delivering on those aims and ambitions are important to him and he has already drawn up a hectic timetable with his team within the Foundation.”
“Two of the biggest areas are around mental health and supporting those who work in the emergency services,” the insider added.
He continues to raise awareness about mental health issues
It’s early into 2020 and Prince William is already doing his part to speak out about mental health issues.
During a visit to Everton Football Club, Prince William met with some of the players to discuss how they deal with mental health issues. One of the players, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, told William: “We have had some tough times over the past two or three seasons and we have helped each other. One thing that nothing can prepare you for is the opinions of thousands and thousands of people.”
One of the players also discussed how they had spoken to other teams and discovered that “it’s not until they have finished playing they have started speaking about [mental health issues].”
Prince William remarked, “They shouldn’t be embarrassed,” something he opened up about for the BBC documentary titled A Royal Team Talk: Tackling Mental Health, in which he shared, “We are nervous about our emotions, we’re a bit embarrassed sometimes.”
He continued: “The British stiff upper lip thing, that’s great and we need to have that occasionally when times are really hard but there has to be a moment for that. But otherwise, we’ve got to relax a little bit and be able to talk about our emotions because we’re not robots.”
