It has surely been a difficult 24 hours for Gayle King. On yesterday’s show, the anchor interviewed Lisa Leslie, a former WNBA player and close friend to Kobe Bryant, during which King brought up Bryant’s 2003 sexual assault charges.
The backlash on Twitter and around the internet was almost instant, questioning the journalist’s motives in discussing Bryant’s darker past when he hasn’t even been laid to rest yet.
Now, even comedian Bill Cosby, who is serving a three to ten year sentence for aggravated indecent assault, is speaking out on King’s interview yesterday.
Here’s what Cosby had to say, King’s reaction, plus CBS’s statement following the uproar.
King says CBS is to blame
After seeing the reaction to the portion of her interview with Leslie in which she asked the WNBA legend about Bryant’s past sexual assault charges, King was furious with the network. She felt the clip shown on social media did not fully capture the breadth of her discussion with Leslie, which in the 65-year-old journalist’s estimation, presented Bryant in a positive light.
“If I had only seen the clip that you saw, I would be extremely angry with me too. I am mortified, I am embarrassed and I am very angry. Unbeknownst to me, my network put up a clip from a very wide-ranging interview, totally taken out of context and when you see it that way, it’s very jarring,” she explained in a video she posted on Twitter.”
“I wanted to get Lisa’s take on it as a friend who knew him well. . .” she said. “It was very powerful when she looked me in the eye, as a member of the media, to say it’s time for the media to leave that alone and back off. . .”
What CBS is saying
For their part, CBS agrees with King and issued a statement to that effect saying, “Gayle conducted a thoughtful, wide-ranging interview with Lisa Leslie about the legacy of Kobe Bryant.”
“An excerpt was posted that did not reflect the nature and tone of the full interview. We are addressing the internal process that led to this and changes have already been made.”
No further statement has been made so far on the CBS This Morning broadcast from either King or the network.
Bill Cosby and Snoop Dogg’s comments about King’s interview
Yesterday, Snoop Dogg was furious with King for mentioning Bryant’s sexual assault charge during her interview with Lisa Leslie. He posted on Instagram his angry comments, saying in part, “Gayle King, out of pocket for that s–t, way out of pocket. . . Why you all attacking us, we your people. You ain’t coming after f–-ing Harvey Weinstein asking him dumb-a– questions.”
Bill Cosby, from his jail cell, also chimed in, directing his Instagram post comments to Snoop Dogg instead of to King or CBS. Cosby also mentioned Michael Jackson in his statement.
“Snoop – when they brought me to my gated community and placed me inside of my penthouse,” the 82-year-old Cosby posted, “they didn’t win nor did they silence me. It’s so sad and disappointing that successful Black Women are being used to tarnish the image and legacy of successful Black Men, even in death.”
“Are these people that in need of fame, ratings and/or money? On behalf of myself, Camille and my family, thank you, thank you and thank you. My heartfelt prayers are with Kobe and his family, as well as with Michael Jackson and his family. May their legacies live on forever.”
