Power consumption in Brazil was up 2% in the third quarter compared to the same period in 2019, the electric energy commercialization chamber (CCEE) said Wednesday.
This was the first quarter this year to register annual growth.
The recovery happened in almost all the segments that negotiate energy supply in the free market, except for the vehicles, transportation, and metallic minerals markets, which fell respectively 8.7%, 7.9%, and 0.7%. The sanitation, commerce and beverage segments were up 32%, 19.9% and 14.8%, respectively.
Hydroelectric power plants produced 14.7% more than a year ago and wind and solar plants 10% and 26.4%, respectively. Only thermoelectric generation was down, by 36.2%.

In September, electric power consumption and generation were up 4% and 4.1% year-over-year, respectively. Power generation totaled 66,388MWa.

Higher temperatures than in the year-ago period in the southeast/center-west and south submarkets and an industrial production increase of 2.6% over August, according to statistics institute IBGE, were the main factors that contributed to rising energy consumption.
Moacyr Carmo, CEO of Argon Comercializadora de Energias, believes power consumption and generation will also register annual growth in the last quarter of 2020.
“This is likely to happen due to the high temperatures in October, which were among the highest of the historical records, and the recovery of the economy,” he told BNamericas.
