DOWNTOWN — Your next package could be delivered by an electronic “cargo” bike, after the City Council approved the use of such delivery vehicles in the city Wednesday.
A new ordinance allows companies such as Fed-Ex and UPS to use electronic, three-wheeled delivery bikes in the city. The use of electronic delivery bikes has gained traction in Europe’s car-free zones, as well as in cities like Seattle, Portland and New York City, according to The Daily Line.
Aldermen overwhelmingly approved their use Wednesday, even though some council members expressed concerns about their safety.
City leaders say the motorized bikes could lessen delivery truck and van traffic in densely populated areas, including Downtown. But some aldermen said they were concerned about the potential for delivery bikes crowding out other bicyclists and causing dangerous conditions on the city’s bike lanes, according to WTTW.
Only Ald. Raymond Lopez (15th) voted against the delivery e-bike measure.
The bikes must not go faster than 15 miles per hour and can’t be wider than four feet, according to the ordinance. Each delivery bike and its driver must be licensed by the city.
The delivery bikes are prohibited from operating on the sidewalk and must use street parking, according to the report.
The e-bike measure previously was advanced by the City Council’s Pedestrian and Traffic Safety Committee as a means of cutting down on delivery truck pollution in Chicago.
